Christmas Croutons

Homemade croutons just blow the pre-fab ones away….don’tcha think?

This is a fun and easy homemade crouton how-to…..and can be done for any season.

But I’ll just share about our Christmas ones since it’s my favorite.

{Pardon the bad pics…..these were taken last year with my old camera.  I’ll have to take new ones this year and update them.}

What you need:

1. mini cookie/pastry cutters {Wilton makes wonderful ones for all seasons.  For these I used the mini Christmas cutters. They come in a small boxed set.}

2. bread…..a thin-sliced loaf bread.  I use wheat.

3. Butter—or equivalent.  {You can use margarine or any other butter substitute that you like.  Of course, real butter is the favored choice!}

4. Italian seasoning {dried}

Using the mini cutters…cut as many shapes out of each slice of bread as possible.

Once you have the amount of croutons that you wish to make {make lots….they store very well in an airtight container} lay them out on a cookie sheet.

Brush with melted butter.

Generously sprinkle with Italian seasoning.

Bake at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes, or until they start to brown.

Once they have cooled…store in an airtight container.

These would make fun gifts to package and hand out!

They are wonderful for salads and soups.  For soups I like to use regular sized cookie cutters and cut out the bread.  Then one giant crouton can be put on top of a bowl of soup or chili.  Really fun!  For Christmas I use a tree shape….and we enjoy using them for our soups and chili all through the month.

Have fun making these all during the year…..snowflakes for winter, hearts for Valentines, flowers for spring, etc.

Merry, Merry~
