Stenciling Dining Chair Cushions

When we were re-doing our dining room not too long ago we wanted to keep our antique flea market chair finds

So, we painted each one a different color,

covered the old cushions in some wonderful striped linen fabric that I found,

and stenciled some of our favorite numbers on each one.

Each number mean something….the number of our honeymoon suite in Vermont,

the number of the rom we stay in at The Inn of Cape May, milestone numbers, etc.

To do this you need everything needed in the faux grain sack tutorial.

One exception:  I didn’t use a brush, I used a stenciling sponge/dauber for this project. You will also need stenciling paper and a matte knife.

Here’s how you do it:

1.  Stencil your numbers AFTER you cover your cushions…this ensures that your numbers will be centered. So, first get your cushions covered.

2.  I made my own stencils using stenciling paper from Michael’s and the computer. Find a font that you like and print it out the size that you would like your print to be on the cushions.

3.  Put the stencil paper {it’s transparent} over your  computer print and trace with a thin marker.

4.  With the matte knife carefully cutout your stencil…be sure to put a hard surface UNDER while you cut. {SUPER IMPORTANT!!} I have ruined floors and tables forgetting to do this. ugh.

5.  Mix your paint and textile medium just like in the grain sack tutorial.

6.  Position your stencil onto the cushion in the desired location and tape it at the corners

7.  Put just a bit of paint on your dauber/sponge and dab it over your design until you get the desired coverage. {I wanted ours to look worn and not dark and opaque…so, I didn’t put tons of paint onto the stencil.} It’s much easier to add more paint if you wish….but you cannot take it away. <eek!>

8.  Carefully remove your stencil and wait at least 24 hours for it to dry before using your chairs.

TAH DAH!!

This would be great for pillows, napkins, etc.  Not just cushions!

I’m so excited…as part of this ongoing re-do {aren’t they all ‘ongoing’?} Handsome came home with bunches of wood and building materials yesterday. 🙂

I love it when he does that! My birthday is this weekend and he is building a buffet for the dining room that goes all the way across one wall for my present! Woohoo!  I’m so excited.  It’s going to be so cool!  I shared our current one with you…and how we use it for major stuffage….now we will have 3x the space!  It will be the same storage idea….but a bit of a different look.  I can hardly wait!  I’ll share it with you.

Happy Thursday~
