Attracting Butterflies & Hummingbirds to Your Garden

A garden is just not complete without birds, butterflies, and ladybugs…right?  I’m sure you already know the wonderful flowers that attract butterflies and hummingbirds.  In case you don’t….here are a few:  lantana, bee balm, trumpet vine, nicotiana, and butterfly bush. But, there are several other things you can do that will bring ’em in fast!

Here are a few things in our garden that work like a dream.  We enjoy sitting on our porch or glancing out the window to see our special visitors.

Butterflies and hummingbirds like very small, shallow water.  We keep this small garden sculpture filled with about 1 inch of fresh water—they love it!

A fun, unexpected surprise of our garden Bottle Edging was that the bottles have small indentations on the bottom—which collect small bits of water each time it rains or we water.  We’ve looked out and seen the garden edging lined with butterflies!  A fun surprise we didn’t even plan.  Love it!

Here’s the biggie……butterflies LOVE oranges and bananas!  In another shallow garden sculpture we keep cut oranges and bananas.  They come in droves!  If you are worried about ants just put a small puddle of water below the fruit—and the ants will drown before reaching it.  {Morbid sounding, isn’t it?}  They especially like the fruit once it has turned black—ugh!  When we replace it–we just throw the used fruit out under one of the bushes for great composting.

These shallow dishes can be found all over the place at this time of year.  Garden centers, discount stores, dollar stores, potteries, etc. You can find them for super cheap—in any theme to fit your fancy. {Or to fit your plain….whichever}

I’m back from my five day adventure….and look forward to sharing some fun stuff with you!

Happy Monday~

  1. I’m going to try the banana and orange idea. Thank you for posting this, we were just talking about attracting butterflies yesterday. Everything we need is right here when we need it, especially information. 🙂
