The day we looked at Oak Cottage with the realtor
this is what the kitchen looked like….
We live in an Acadian Cottage……French Acadian designs get their influence from the quaint cottages found in France’s countryside. Using masonry, wood siding, and slanted roofs they portray simple living at its best.
I guess simple means ‘small kitchen’. I thought I like simple…maybe I’m more complicated than I realize. I know I’m high-maintenance…does that mean complicated? Ha! A post for another day!
In the Acadian design the kitchen, living room, and dining room are all considered separate rooms that conjoin through doorways….this is this particular design and style’s method of designating spaces.
When we first saw Oak Cottage we loved it…
but the kitchen was a bit of a surprise.
It was small, had lots of floor space {we added an island},
very little cabinet and counter space,
and pretty much a non-existent pantry.
Our kitchen went through many transformations….
all cosmetic….for years.
It became a funny joke at our annual Christmas Party.
People would come through the door and ask
“What’s the kitchen like this year?”…
because for about five years it changed yearly! ha!
Here is what it looked like before our current transformation…
{and it stayed like this for a record 10+ years!}
It had lots of fun artwork, bright colors, and whimsy.
I had fun painting it with whimsical artwork.
We loved it…but a few years ago we were ready
for a change. So, here’s Handsome beginning
the change with adding white subway tile on all the walls….
Here we are today…..almost finished!
We just need to put in the farmhouse sink,
and Handsome will be pouring concrete countertops. Yay!
{I didn’t style the photos for you guys…this is how it looks everyday.}
Love paper straws…just had to throw this one in here….
Love this view out the kitchen door…
out to what we call The Nook with
Hope your week is going well…I can’t believe it is already Wednesday!

Beautiful job!! Love all the personal touches and the colors:)
Thanks, Deidre!
Love the photos and how the kitchen turned out. I recently did my kitchen as well. but I’ll admit its in the in between stage. Had to change something to keep living with it. You just got me itching to do more.
That in between spot can be a hard place…that’s where we’ve been with our kitchen for what seems like forever! {Waiting for the farmhouse sink in the right size, etc.}
Looks lovely, we redid our kitchen when we first moved in and also went for white cabinets its lovely having a place to cook and socialise. well done for a great job xox
Thanks, Ashleigh!

Catherine {Stone and Rose}
Welcome, Catherine! So glad to have you! Happy Easter….
The shelf under your upper cabinets is pure genius! I would love to have something like that so I would have access to the items I use daily, yet I could keep my counters clear. I’m keeping this in mind for our next house. 🙂
Jenna~ My husband made them…they are called floating shelves, and we absolutely LOVE them! Convenient to use and add so much character. 🙂
Fabulous my friend!!
Happy belated Easter.

Great transformation! love the black and white!
Thanks, Jocie!
I love your kitchen – especially the island. Where did you find your coffee mug holder? I looked all over for something with that “industrial” look but haven’t been able to locate one. But I love yours. Would you share your source for it?
Thanks so much, Cathy! What we have our cups on is actually a vintage French bottle rack…or French drying rack. I stay on the lookout for them on ebay and etsy…and anytime I go to flea markets, etc. I love them, and you can use them for so many purposes.
